Autumn Leaves
Description:
This is a bass transcription from a Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley date on Blue Note called 'Somethin' Else', recorded in 1958, the year before the seminal 'Kind Of Blue', Miles' masterpiece (Cannonball Adderley is paired with Miles on that date, too). Miles Davis is featured throughout the 'Somethin' Else' album, and contributed to the selection of material, and many consider Adderley and Davis as co-leaders of the date. The lineup is Cannonball on alto saxophone, Miles on muted trumpet, Hank Jones (rest his soul, he passed in 2010) on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. The arrangement of 'Autumn Leaves' is one of the more complex and beautiful ever recorded. Hank Jones' ad-lib interlude was suggested by Miles, and the melody is returned to at a slightly slower pace after. The piece closes with an improvised passage that floats on a minor chord theme. One of the masterpieces of jazz.
